Hello everyone. I am pleased to introduce my new plastic surgery practice – Birchenough Plastic Surgery - and myself to the Upstate South Carolina community.
Though I grew up in a small northern New York town, the southeast has been home for more than fifteen years – and my wife Katherine is a native South Carolinian.
An MIT aerospace engineer by training, I realized my calling to medicine and plastic surgery after several years in the corporate world.
My medical education was acquired from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, culminating in my MD. A six-year plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at the University of Virginia Health System followed. My training encompassed the full scope of plastic and reconstructive surgery - surgical training, clinical care, and research. All areas were covered: face, head and neck, breast, cosmetic, hand, burn, wound care, and general reconstruction. Research and clinical care led to publications in leading plastic surgery journals. The surgeons, fellow residents, and staff of UVA Plastic Surgery remain good friends and colleagues.
Recently, I completed an elective, year-long breast and cosmetic surgery fellowship under Dr. Patrick Maxwell in Nashville. I worked with him to understand innovations in all types of breast procedures. While there, I refined my techniques in cosmetic breast surgery – breast augmentation (breast enhancement), revisionary breast augmentation, mastopexy (breast lift), and breast reduction.
Breast reconstruction is an area of particular interest to me. We worked closely with an oncologic surgeon while improving techniques for breast reconstruction with a tissue expander and breast implant, autologous tissue (flap), or a combination of both.
Also, while working with other Nashville plastic surgeons, I acquired more proficiency on a wide range of cosmetic procedures - abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), tumescent and ultra-sonic assisted liposuction on all areas of the body, and facial rejuvenation surgery (forehead, eyelid, face, and neck lifts as well as nasal surgery).
Patient education is an important element of my consultation. I look forward to meeting new patients for reconstruction and cosmetic plastic surgery consultation. I want to understand patient expectations and help patients make informed decisions about plastic surgery procedures. Working closely with your other doctors is of great importance to me as well.
Please contact Tiffany, my patient care coordinator, or me directly if there is anything we can do to help. We participate with all of the major health insurance networks and all of the regional hospital systems. In our association with Advanced Cosmetic Surgery, we have an accredited in-office operating room suite for all types of cosmetic procedures. I look forward to meeting you soon.
